mexican cookbook kit

(Watch the video from Calabasas TV Author’s Night to learn more about the author and the Handstand Kids cookbook series.)

Handstand Kids publishes wonderful cookbooks and supplies that teach about different cultures and their foods for children of all ages. The author, Yvette Garfield, is a child’s rights lawyer, who has travelled a lot, and she realized that a great way for children to learn about other cultures is through their foods (certainly the most interesting part of the culture, at least for me!)

I received the delightful Handstand Kids Mexican Cookbook Kit, which includes a forward by Aaron Sanchez about the importance of food and family.  Aaron (of Food Network fame) tells of how he wishes that he had a book like this as a child.  I agree. I loved cookbooks as a child, but there were so few geared specifically towards children.

The cookbook kits are designed for family fun, with kid-friendly things like one to four avocado ratings to help children understand the level of difficulty of each recipe. There are sixteen recipes in the Mexican book, each with an alternate recipe possibility. To help children learn about the culture from each cookbook, the packets include an “Introduction to Spanish” — lists of the ingredients and tools necessary for the recipes, in English and Spanish.

There are a lot of fun ideas that children would enjoy, like the chicken tostada, made with a bowl that they can eat! There is another section about Mexican-izing your old stand-bys, like making quesadillas instead of grilled cheese sandwiches. The chapter on sweets has some yummy treats, including no-sugar Applicious Taquitos, like apple pie rolled into a tortilla! Mmmmm!

All of the foods in the Handstand Kids Mexican Cookbook Kit are nutritious family style dishes which would be fun for the whole family to cook together.  Every page of the cookbook is so colorful, with colored backgrounds and lots of fun pictures of the Handstand Kids making and enjoying the food.

I loved how the cookbook kits come with extra creative touches like an oven mitt that’s included in the Mexican kit, and how it all comes packaged in a “tortilla” bag, which make them extra fun for gift giving! I highly recommend the Handstand Kids Mexican Cookbook Kit as a excellent way for children to learn about other cultures through food!
